Off-Duty Motorcycle Officer Killed In Crash - Clermont, FL
Clermont police officer Robert Sayers, 39, was on his motorcycle when he ran into the back of another vehicle on State Road 50 in Sumter County on Wednesday. Eyewitness News learned Thursday that Sayers was wearing his helmet and he was off-duty at the time, heading home after his patrol shift at the Clermont Police Department.

The front of Clermont police headquarters has become a memorial, with flowers, a department motorcycle and a photograph of Sayers, who had been with the department for two years.

"Officer Sayers was a very well-liked officer. He was loved by the community. Very friendly, outgoing personality," Clermont officer Jeremy Kevitt said.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Sayers was killed late Wednesday afternoon while riding his personal motorcycle. Troopers say Sayers rear-ended a car that had stopped behind a school bus.

The officer was wearing a helmet. The driver of the car he hit was not hurt.

"I'm kind of choked up about it. I hate to hear things like this," Clermont business owner Larry Miller said. "From knowing the guy, yes it's kind of heart wrenching."

Sayers' home in Hernando County was more than 50 miles from his job. Police aren't sure why the crash happened; he had been doing the long rides home for two years....     Read the full story.

He got stuck in traffic just before he got to the plaza, said Bushway.
