Plenty of officers for motorcycle duty - San Bernardino, CA
It's apparent there's no shortage of officers wanting to take on the duty of motorcycle officer, despite the potential danger. San Bernardino County sheriff's Cpl. Wayne Martin began training a new group of motorcycle officers last week at the agency's Emergency Vehicle Operations Center in Devore.

During the cloudy morning, officers rode their black-and-white Kawasakis and BMWs uphill to an asphalt training course dotted with orange cones.

The group of nine -- from Fontana, Temecula, West Covina and other cities -- were in for a tough two weeks of exercises and testing, Martin said.

The sound of rumbling motors was occasionally interrupted an instructor's commands or the scrape of footboards across the asphalt by an officer taking a turn too tight. One officer whose motorcycle fell over was met an enthusiastic "Safe!" by an instructor who gave the umpire's hand gesture. The officer grinned and began to upright the bike, an estimated 800 pounds or more. "They're going to fall in the first week," Martin said. "If they're falling in the second week, then we have problems."

Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Ron Griffith, who works out of the Temecula station, was among the group of new motor officers.

He said riding has been a part of his life since he was 14. But it took him more than 16 years in law enforcement to decide to become a motor officer....     Read the full story.

Dorsey said that at the time of the accident, the officer was looking at a bike rack on the Walk while traveling at a very low rate of speed -- below 5 miles per hour.

While the officer briefly diverted his attention to examine the rack, Dorsey said, he failed to notice the man and woman, who had walked in front of his bike.

The motorcycle struck the couple, who are both 26.

Well-liked MPD officer dies in motorcycle crash - Murfreesboro, TN
Murfreesboro Police Officer Kay Rogers didn't like rushing to emergency calls while riding her motorcycle on duty because of safety concerns, Detective Ava Radley said.
v "She said she didn't want to get taken from her mother," Radley said.

Rogers, 43, of Murfreesboro, died in the line of duty about 3 a.m. Wednesday after a Tuesday crash on Middle Tennessee Boulevard near Bellwood Elementary School.

She became Murfreesboro's first and only woman motorcycle officer in 2003.

Rogers was one of eight officers assigned to the motorcycle unit. She previously worked at La Vergne Police Department and her hometown Jackson Police Department.

Flags were lowered to half-staff and law enforcement officers throughout the county wore black bands across their badges to memorialize Rogers.

Radley was a close friend of Rogers' since she joined Murfreesboro Police four years ago.

"She called me her soul sister," Radley said.

Rogers was proud to be the first female motorcycle officer.

"She held her head up with pride," Radley said. "She did her job."

When she noticed drivers speeding or running red lights, she stopped them.

"If you deserved that ticket, you got it," Radley said.

While some people believed the quiet Rogers was unapproachable, Radley found she had a "heart of gold."

Rogers, who was single, loved her nieces and nephews, calling them her children.

"She cared for them like they were her own kids," Radley said. "She called them her babies."

Officer Mona Thomas-Jennings met Rogers when they worked at La Vergne Police from 1999 to 2001. Rogers was private but when a friend needed something, she responded.

"She was a very determined person," Thomas said.

Jennings' husband, Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Bennie Jennings Jr., teaches motorcycle officers at the state training academy. Rogers experienced some problems with the motorcycle maneuvers....     Read the full story.

"She was the first female ever to seek and receive a motorcycle assignment" in Murfreesboro, Chrisman said. "The job that she had ... is a lot of times a thankless job, and very difficult to do well without upsetting people.

"She was always very professional and straightforward with how she carried out her job tasks."

Rush-Hour Accident Throws Officer Off Motorcycle - Houston, TX
A Houston police officer on a motorcycle escorting an oversized 18-wheeler was injured in an accident on a southwest Houston freeway Thursday morning.

Investigators said Houston Police Department Officer Ed Farris was one of two solo officers escorting the oversized truck as it traveled on Highway 59, the Southwest Freeway, at about 6:30 a.m.

As the truck and officers moved into the right lane as they approached the Westpark Drive exit and traffic slowed to about 10 mph, a motorist entering the highway wedged between the officer and the truck, which set off a chain-reaction collision.

Accident investigators said the big rig struck the car, causing the car to spin. That is when the car clipped the motorcycle, sending the bike on its side and the officer into the middle of a busy freeway.

The driver of the car was ticketed for changing lanes when unsafe. He was not injured.

"It appears he just made an honest mistake. He thought he had enough clearance to change lanes, not realizing that he needs to let an 18-wheeler have a little bit more stopping distance," HPD Officer Arthur Taylor III told KPRC Local 2....     Read the full story.

Missoula cop becomes gay community liaison - Missoula, MT
His pleasant demeanor and baby face aside, Sgt. Scott Oak is a tough cop.

You might have seen him patrolling Missoula’s streets on a motorcycle oblivious to the cold and, if you’re lucky, zooming past your rig to nail a speeder.

When the roads get icy, he’ll be assigned a police cruiser, though much to his chagrin.

As a law enforcement officer in Missoula and Great Falls, and as a cadet in the U.S. Air Force, Oak earned the respect of Montana’s law enforcement community.

His thoroughness as a patrol officer and painstaking attention to detail in reports and investigations didn’t fall below the radar of Police Chief Rusty Wickman.

So when Oak volunteered as liaison officer to Missoula’s gay and lesbian community — a position the department had long been considering — Wickman pledged his support, and told the motor cop to make it happen....     Read the full story.

RN gave officer a 'fighting chance' - Murfreesboro, TN
Registered nurse Brandy Smith tried to save Murfreesboro Police Officer Kay Rogers after she suffered critical injuries in a crash Tuesday on Middle Tennessee Boulevard.

Rogers was riding her motorcycle on duty when another driver turned in front of her about 7:50 p.m. near Bellwood School, police said. She died of her injuries the next morning.

Smith, who drove behind Rogers, said she rushed to the fallen officer. When Smith found the officer wasn't breathing and didn't have a pulse, the nurse started cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

"She took a breath, and I felt her pulse," Smith said. "My main concern was keeping her breathing, keeping her alive."

Smith encouraged Rogers, even though she knew the seriousness of her condition.

"I had hoped she'd come back," Smith said as tears filled her eyes during an interview Friday.

Smith was driving with her four children — ages 9, 7, 5 and 4-months-old — when she saw Rogers ahead of her on the motorcycle.

The taillight on the motorcycle suddenly disappeared. Smith stopped behind Rogers, using the headlights to light up the dark street. She told her children to stay in the SUV until her husband, Daryl, who was traveling behind them, arrived.

An unidentified woman and man also stopped. Smith directed the woman to call 911....     Read the full story.

Get your motor running - Berlin, CT
Most people enjoy a whole lot of nothing on their first day on the job.

Usually there is training and getting acclimated to the new environment any time someone starts a new endeavor.

Though Berlin police officer Richard Doski has been on the force for three years, he started a new post last week.

Doski, for now, will be the lone motorcycle cop in town, after the department bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle thanks to a grant from the State Department of Transportation.

On his first day on the job, Doski made a traffic stop and the driver had a warrant out for his arrest. Doski and the Harley had made a difference already after one day on the job.

“It definitely heightens your senses,” Doski said. “You have to be more aware and alert. You see things from a different angle than you do in the car. You can see seat belts and cell phones more clearly. There are a lot of benefits.”

Doski said the first day on the job was very exciting....     Read the full story.
