Police Endure Rigorous Training for Motorcycle Squad - Salt Lake City, UT
The TV shows made it look glamorous, officers on motorcycles riding to the rescue. But in reality, it's a lot more work and the motorcycle squad training sends many police officers packing before it's over.
By the time you see them, they have it down, but first there is a lot of starting and mostly stopping.
Robert Hawke, Instructor: "Most of them have never been on a motorcycle."
Michael Lowgher, Salt Lake City Police Officer: "Just exciting to be out here, little scary."
Michael Lowgher has been on the force with Salt Lake City more than two years.
Michael Lowgher: "Always wanted to ride a motorcycle. Thought this would be a good way to get extra training."
But he knows what he's in for.
Michael Lowgher: "Two week class, full 13 days from 7:00 in the morning, not sure when it ends."
The 13-day training is rigorous and intense. Fewer than half of the officers complete it.
Robert Hawke: "When you see one of these guys go down at 40 miles an hour, it will scar you. And a lot of them will pack it up and leave after they see that."
It's even more difficult to see when it happens on the job. In February, a Salt Lake City Motorcycle officer was injured in a crash on Bangerter Highway. He slid 200 feet before hitting a barrier. Injuries happen in training, too....

On-duty crash in Ariz. kills East grad - Rockford, IL
An East High School graduate who became a police officer in Arizona was killed in a weekend hit-and-run accident.
Robert Targosz, 37, a 12-year veteran of the Gilbert Police Department and 1987 graduate of East High School who was captain of the wrestling team his senior year, died from injuries he sustained when his police motorcycle collided with a Ford Mustang at 6:35 p.m. Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.
“I remember him well,” said Perry Giardini, who coached Targosz in football and wrestling at East.
“We had a falling out and I actually kicked him off the wrestling team his junior year. He came back his senior year and was voted captain.”
Giardini said that being voted captain is one of the highest honors for athletes because they are appointed to that position by their peers.
Giardini recalled meeting up with Targosz last year when the Gilbert officer came to Rockford. They talked about their falling out and Targosz’s eventual redemption, among other things.
“He told me, ‘Thanks for not turning your back on me,’ ” Giardini said.
According to a news release from the Tempe Police Department, Targosz was on his way to work Saturday night in his uniform and on his police motorcycle, when he was hit by a Ford Mustang.

Officers ride home winners - Jacksonville, FL
Determining the best police motorcycle unit in the state is still a bit of a subjective matter, but the numbers from last month’s Southeast Police Motorcycle Skills and Training competition in Coral Springs are tough to argue with: 13 members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office motorcycle unit won a combined 14 awards.
“I am very proud of how they did,” said Sgt. Jim Suber, the special events coordinator for JSO. “We have been going down there for 15 years and we’ve done real good in the past, but we have never taken awards like this.”
The JSO unit won the overall award as well as first place in both the individual and team categories. The group also took second in the team category and fourth and fifth in the individual competition. Officer Darren Harris won the top individual award in the state.
The annual event consists of three days of training and one day of actual competition. Suber explained the process involves five exercises over two courses: one slower, untimed course that involves maneuvering around cones without touching them, putting a foot down or laying the bike down. The other course is similar except that it’s timed.
“You want to go through it as fast and as safely as you can,” said Suber, adding that both courses are worth five points and perfect navigation of both is worth five bonus points. “Obviously, you want to go as safely and as cleanly as you can. But, you also want to go as fast as you can.”
“The courses are designed to teach officers how to maneuver the cycle on the road through obstacles and traffic. It’s geared toward officer safety, which is the No. 1 priority. Better riders can also pay better attention to the public when they are on the road.”
The competition isn’t just about bringing home the hardware, it’s also an annual fundraiser. Suber said the event is held in the parking lot of the Coral Springs mall and money is raised for the Muscular Dystrophy Association as well as for an organization called Concerns of Police Survivors — a group that helps provide for the families of officers killed in the line of duty.
The JSO’s motorcycle unit isn’t just one of the best in the state: membership is also in high demand. Suber, whose father was a member of the motorcycle unit in the 1950s, said JSO doesn’t recruit internally specifically for the unit....

Pull over Harley, looks like Honda's on your tail - San Francisco, CA
For nearly a century, they have been a staple of action movies -- the hardy motorcycle cops tearing after the bank robbers, the bikes skidding around corners.
In the end, the bad guys are carted off to jail and the cop, shod invariably in high black boots and wearing oversize dark glasses, hops back on the motorcycle and zooms off.
In fact, police in the United States have been using motorcycles since about 1912 when the nascent Harley-Davidson Co. started outfitting a few departments with them. The cycles turned out to be a godsend for traffic enforcement -- they could chase speeders through traffic, and they could get to the scene of an accident far faster than a patrol car. This basic principle still holds true.
For nearly 100 years, Harley has dominated the U.S. market -- the company said last year that its motorcycles "are presently in service with some 2,800 law enforcement agencies nationwide."
Now, however, Honda, the world's most successful maker of motorcycles, is testing the law enforcement waters here. Honda has the largest share of the U.S. civilian motorcycle market, with 26.9 percent of all new bikes sold in the United States, followed by Harley with 23.7 percent and then a handful of other manufacturers, according to figures for 2004 provided by the Motorcycle Industry Council.
BMW successfully competes in the police motorcycle market -- the big German firm has supplied police motorcycles to agencies all over the world. In the United States, it sells police bikes to agencies in 29 states. It has sold more than 500 of its R1150RT-P model to the California Highway Patrol, which industry officials say buys more motorcycles than any other law enforcement agency in the country.
Honda's entry in this field is the ST1300P, a 1,261cc bike that is the police version of the "sport-touring" ST1300. That motorcycle grew out of the popular Honda ST1100, introduced in 1990 (as a 1991 model). Bikers' legend says the bike, first sold in Europe as the Pan-European, had to meet design criteria requiring it to average 100 miles per hour across Europe's freeways for an entire tank (7.4 gallons) of gas. Apparently, it lived up to the job....

Stung at the crosswalk - Costa Mesa, CA
Two Costa Mesa police employees took their chances Wednesday at a crosswalk at 17th Street and Westminster Avenue as part of an undercover sting to spread awareness about the need for motorists to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
People said the crosswalk at the busy intersection is a problem, and police have received numerous complaints that it's too dangerous for pedestrians to cross there.
"I'm an old lady, and I want to know why nobody stops," said Newport Beach resident Marilyn Paulsen, 77, who walks often in the area.
Paulsen said she was glad to see police conducting the crosswalk enforcement Wednesday and personally thanked the police officers there. She said she was almost hit by a car while crossing Newport Boulevard recently.
Police wrote 61 citations to motorists who failed to stop when the two decoys walked in the marked crosswalk during the three-hour sting Wednesday.

Motorcycle safety a concern for state troopers - Columbus, OH
To kick-off Motorcycle Awareness Month, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) are continuing their Ride Smart. Drive Smart. safety education partnership for a second riding season.
Motorcycle safety is a particular concern for troopers as there has been a considerable statewide increase in motorcycle crash fatalities.
In 2005, there were 177 motorcyclist fatalities, a 37-percent increase compared to the average number of motorcyclist deaths over the past five years. As of April this year, there have been 22 fatalities involving motorcycles.
In Clermont County, there were three motorcycle fatalities during 2005. So far this year, one motorcyclist, Anthony Becraft, was killed on a Clermont County roadway.
In part to combat the increase of motorcycle fatalities on Ohio roadways, the patrol reintroduced motorcycle units after a 50-year absence. Troopers who will be part of the unit have attended the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety's Police Motorcycle Operator Training.
Starting in June, motorcycle unit troopers will begin riding in the Columbus metropolitan area, focusing on metropolitan interstate enforcement and conducting motorcycle safety education efforts....

Missoula officer recognized for bravery in taking gay/lesbian liaison position - Missoula, MT
Missoula Police Sgt. Scott Oak is gay, a fact not lost on vandals who scratch the word into his pickup truck or throw eggs at his house while hollering anti-gay epithets.
In addition to the vandalism, his work as liaison to the gay and lesbian community here is drawing national press attention that credits him with bravely breaking new ground.
Last week, a film crew shadowed him for several days and the producer, Craig Deltrone, plans to come back again in June.
The footage will be part of a one-hour documentary about gay men and women who are ‘‘out’’ in the workplace. The film is expected to air in January on a network called Logo, a new channel from MTV Networks with programming geared for the gay, lesbian and transgendered.
Oak also was the subject of a USA Today piece on people who shattered stereotypes, as well as local news stories announcing the creation of his position last fall.

DUI task force makes 65 arrests - Mesa, AZ
A combined police effort to get impaired drivers off East Valley roads over the Memorial Day weekend had produced at least 65 DUI arrests as of Saturday night.
The Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe police departments have continued a more than 20-year tradition by forming a DUI task force this weekend, and Mesa police Sgt. Thom Intrieri said he believes the campaign will produce more DUI arrests than last year.
Statewide, officers made more than 540 DUI arrests during the 2005 Memorial Day weekend, records show.
“We’re starting to see the number of DUI arrests increase on impaired drivers because of the number of fatalities, especially with the untimely death of Gilbert police officer Rob Targosz, who was killed by a drunk driver,” Intrieri said. “That’s lit a fire under many of the officers who knew him, to make more DUI arrests. Monday will be our busiest day.”
Targosz, a motorcycle officer, was killed April 30 in a hit-and-run collision while driving to work...

Officers on bikes train hard: BR Police Department trains motorcycle officers to do more than just ride - Baton Rouge, LA
When Sgt. Todd Weishar became a Police Department motorcycle officer 17 years ago, he was given the keys to his bike on his first day of work and was required to ride with a senior officer for a few days before setting out on his own.
Getting on the department’s motorcycle officer force wasn’t much harder.
Weishar, now a supervisor in the department’s traffic division, wrote a letter stating he wanted to be a motorcycle officer, interviewed and passed a simple driving test.
“If you could turn in a circle and brake, that was good enough,” he said.
Today, police officers who aspire to ride a motorcycle for the force must pass a week of extensive training initiated by Jeff LeDuff in 1991, years before took over as police chief last year. The training is modeled after Harley-Davidson’s Technical Training School, which works with Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety.
If they pass the training course, officers spend another week just riding the roads and another week patrolling with a trainer. They also are required to attend quarterly training.
“We now teach people to work on a cycle, not just ride one,” LeDuff said.
A motorcycle officer hasn’t died in a traffic accident while riding his bike in 22 years....
