Pennsylvania State Police turns 100 - North Towanda, PA
A lot may have changed in 100 years, but the aim remains the same. Whether from horseback, motorcycle, in a cruiser or by aircraft, the Pennsylvania State Police have always been about protecting law-abiding citizens.

The Pennsylvania State Police department was instituted May 2, 1905 in response to labor disputes and violence that had exploded in new communities during the Industrial Revolution and as rapid growth occurred in the Commonwealth whereas it used to be mostly agricultural. The uniformed police organization was the first of its kind in the United States and was a model for other states to follow. It started out with only 228 men.

President Theodore Roosevelt soon said of them, "The Pennsylvania State Police is a model of efficiency, a model of honesty, a model of absolute freedom from political contamination....I feel so strongly about them that the mere fact a man is honorably discharged from this Force would make me at once, and without hesitation, employ him for any purpose needing courage, prowess, good judgment, loyalty, and entire trustworthiness."...     Read the full story.

Ho-Ho-Kus Council weighs police motorcycle force of one - Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ
The Police Department may establish a motorcycle detail by year's end, but the "fleet" would consist of a single bike, with initially just one officer trained to ride it.

"The council has determined it's worthwhile to pursue a motorcycle detail," said Mayor Thomas W. Randall.

"A motorcycle can be an effective tool here," Police Chief Gregory Kallenberg said, but he added that the bike would not be a major part of the 16-member department's patrol force. Officer safety is the first concern, he said.

Peter Tiernan, a 24-year veteran, is slated to enroll in a motorcycle safety course at the Bergen County Police Academy in Mahwah in August. Tiernan has been an advocate of the motorcycle detail for years....     Read the full story.

State police revive cycle patrol: Harley-Davidsons to help special enforcement duties on Indiana highways. - Bremen, IN

Two troopers from the Bremen ISP post, Geoffrey Gruber and Bruce Duhime, began their new ride May 1.

Gruber was at the post Tuesday to show off the new bike he and Duhime learned to ride at training provided by Harley-Davidson through Northwestern University's Traffic Institute.

After 65 years, state police are re-cycling - Sellersburg, IN
The Indiana State Police have reached back to their 1930s roots for a traffic enforcement tool troopers have not used in 6 ½ decades.

Nineteen troopers began patrolling the roads full time on Harley-Davidson motorcycles on Sunday. Motorcycles -- Harley-Davidsons and Indians -- were the vehicles of choice when the agency was formed in 1933.

But in 1939, practicality won out over derring-do and the motorcycles were sold for $10 each, to be replaced by six-cylinder cars, according to a 2001 history of the state police by Marilyn Olsen.

Two troopers from the Seymour post and one from the Sellersburg post showed off new 2005 Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide police bikes painted the familiar state police black with gold trim yesterday at Sellersburg....     Read the full story.

Motorcycle cops escort bicyclists - Perth Amboy, NJ
It's physically demanding work. Getting on and off a hot, 800-pound motorcycle to direct traffic and keep bicycle riders safe in the 300-mile Police Unity Tour to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C.

"You always say it's the last year," said Capt. Benjamin Ruiz, head of the Perth Amboy Police Department's Motorcycle Unit.

But Ruiz, who has served on the force since 1988, said there is a point in the tour every year when he's reminded why the three-day tour from Ground Zero to Washington, D.C., to pay tribute to the officers who have died in the line of duty is so important.

He describes a slight bend in the road in Washington, D.C., on route to the police memorial where you can see the long line of motorcycles and bicycles coming in two at a time against the background of the White House and the Jefferson Memorial.

"No matter what you did in the run, they (the officers who died) paid a higher price and it's worth it. It's well worth doing," said Ruiz....     Read the full story.

Motorcycle officers rope in learning, fun at police rodeo - Portsmouth, VA
Motorcycle police officers are hoping that a new competition will help sharpen riders’ skills, as well as let motor patrol officers trade tips and network.

Five jurisdictions were represented among 19 competitors at the first Chesapeake Bay Police Motorcycle Rodeo Competition this weekend in Portsmouth, said Officer Timm Faesi , a 40 -year-old Wisconsin native who has ridden a motorcycle for the Police Department since 1990 . He helped organize the event.

“If you don’t train on a regular basis ... you lose that edge,” Faesi said following the competition, which could become an annual event, held at a training facility off Seaboard Court on Saturday afternoon.

After a day of friendly, two-wheeled competition, city motorcycle patrol officers entertained counterparts from other communities late Saturday at the Fraternal Order of Police hall on Court Street.

In addition to the normal perils an officer may face, policing on a bike has its own challenges.

A bike is smaller than a car, and its rider, relying on his balance as much as horsepower, is exposed.

Faesi said a bike can be more maneuverable than a patrol car, particularly in traffic – and with an expert officer gripping the throttle.

There were officers from Chesapeake, Henrico County, Fairfax County and federal park police.

Proceeds from the event will go to the March of Dimes.     Read the full story.

Motorcycle detail to help with speeders - Linton, IN
The Indiana State Police Bloomington Post has a couple of new tools to fight speeders on area roadways.

They are sleek, elusive and very swift in terms of speed and the ability to maneuver.

Two fully dressed Harley-Davidson Electric Glide highly polished black-colored motorcycles are now patrolling the roads in District 33 -- which serves Greene, Monroe, Lawrence, Brown and Owen counties -- on the lookout for traffic violators.

The two-man motorcycle detail -- staffed by troopers Todd Durnill and Brad Mundy -- actually are assigned to the southern half of Indiana as part of a new 20-man statewide detail. There are six troopers assigned to cycles in southern Indiana.

Trooper Mundy, who formerly served with the ISP Methamphetamine Task Force, said, "We get together and wolfpack and targeting certain districts. One day we may come here (to Greene County) and work as a group."

The motorcycle patrol replaces the old Camero car patrol that ISP formerly operated in the state. The project started last November under a federal grant fund that pays for the overtime.

The biggest advantage of the motorcycles over the high-performance Cameros is fuel economy and cost, Mundy said.

"Believe it or not, they are cheaper," he stated.

Mundy, who has been a trooper for just over five years, said each full-equipped 2005 Harley cost between $15,000 and $17,000. The price tag on the Cameros were more than $25,000 each. In terms of fuel consumption, the new belt-driven motorcycles, equipped with a 1,450 cc, 88 cubic inch twin V-8 engine, get about 40 miles per gallon.

The Harleys are equipped with radar, radio, sirens and emergency lights. Side compartments hold a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, rain gear, as well as ticket books, crash reports and other paperwork.

The cycle features a not-yet-released anti-locking braking system for safety and is equipped with a special "police model" air-ride seat -- designed for a comfort, Mundy said with a big smile.

"It is a smooth ride."

The troopers wear headphone and microphone equipped black-colored helmets to allow for hands-free communication if they desire. They are also attired in a standard ISP uniform and wear knee-length leather biker boots.

The Harleys aren't equipped for passengers, so if troopers have to transport a prisoner they have to call for assistance.

Mundy, who lives in Ellettsville, was one of four troopers in the state to be trained in the project in October 2004 as part of a pilot project that was initiated in and around the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In November 2004, 16 additional troopers received motorcycles....     Read the full story.

Officers revved up for bike duty: Canton Township motorcycle program trains cops from Metro police departments - Canton Township, MI
The officers kicked their motorcycles into first gear, and gave their engines a little throttle. They were ready.

At painfully slow speeds, they weaved their 850-pound bikes, one by one, around orange cones, making dangerously tight turns -- leaning left, leaning right, leaning left -- in a steady, precarious rhythm.

After 56 hours of training, the latest class of "motor officers" tested their mettle at a Canton Township park this week, in hopes of joining the ranks of officers who patrol suburban streets on motorcycles.

The basic training program is run by the Canton Township Police Department, and is a rite of passage for officers from around the state who aspire to graduate from four wheels to two. One of a handful of training programs in Michigan, this one trains officers -- mostly from Metro Detroit -- in maneuvering a motorcycle safely at low speeds.

"Today, you either make it or break it, and I hope we make it today," said Officer Fuad Peysakhov of the West Bloomfield police, as he watched his classmates ride by.

The latest class was made up of six officers from around the state, some of whom had never ridden a motorcycle before....     Read the full story.

Man leads police on Downtown-North Hills chase - Pittsburgh, PA
For a Pittsburgh police officer, his shift yesterday afternoon was supposed to be a rather routine one: issuing traffic citations Downtown.

But one man who was idling his car in a no-parking zone in the 200 block of Fifth Avenue refused the officer's repeated requests to move his vehicle. And instead, the motorcycle officer was led on a five-mile chase, in which he fired a shot at the driver after he attempted to knock him off his bike.

The officer was treated at the hospital for abrasions and bruising on his right arm, then released.

The suspect, who was not struck by the officer's bullet and didn't return fire, was apprehended by a Ross police officer. City detectives were interviewing him last night, but did not release his name. Charges were pending.
