A U.S. Park Police spokesman said the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon and involved the motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle. The spokesman gave no details about how the accident occurred and says he doesn't know the extent of the officer's injuries.

Cary traffic police get new unifoms, cycles - Cary, NC
The Cary Police Department on Thursday rolled out new uniforms and motorcycles for its Traffic Safety Team.

Designed especially for motorcycle riding, the new uniforms are equipped with reinforced nylon and pads to protect the officer in the event of a crash, officials said. Full-face helmets offer more protection for the officer’s face and help decrease wind noise so officers can better communicate on their radios.

The BMW motorcycles offer greater safety in braking distance and improved handling under normal and adverse driving conditions, officials said. The motorcycles are designed exclusively for use by law enforcement officers, providing faster acceleration and smoother manageability.

"Safety is our No. 1 priority, which is why we switched to the reinforced uniforms and motorcycles designed specifically for law enforcement,” Capt. Tracy Jernigan said in a statement. “Of course, we’re also very happy that the motorcycle purchases are expected to cut our bottom line and save the town money long-term."...     Read the full story.

Wine and beer tasting Sunday to help officers attend D.C. memorial - Carson City, NV
A wine tasting and motorcycle demonstration Sunday at Harley Davidson will help Carson City Motor Officers attend the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., in May.

Carson City Sheriff’s deputy Sal Acosta said this year is especially important because a Sacramento sheriff’s officer killed in the line of duty will have his name added to the memorial.

Larry Canfield, 43, was killed Nov. 12 in an auto accident.

Acosta said that Canfield, along with several other officers from the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office, had attended every Carson City Sheriff’s Extreme Motor Officer Training in the past six years.

“We always read about some officer from some agency that died for some reason.

Normally we don’t know the guy personally,” said Acosta. “But in this case, we know the person. It’s personal for us. We want to go to Washington. We want to be there when they put his name on the wall. He is a friend of ours.”

Sunday’s event begins at noon and runs until the fun ends, said Acosta....     Read the full story.

Oakland Shooting Leaves Three Police Officers Dead - Oakland, CA
Three Oakland police officers were fatally shot and one critically injured in two related incidents Saturday afternoon by a suspect, who was also killed.

The incident began when Lovelle Mixon, a 26-year-old Oakland resident driving a 1995 Buick, was stopped at 1:08 p.m. by two motorcycle officers on the 7400 block of MacArthur Boulevard, Oakland police said at a press conference Saturday night.

Mixon allegedly shot the officers, killing one and leaving the other in critical condition, said Oakland police.

At about 1:16 p.m., officers responding to a 911 call found the two motorcycle officers wounded at the scene of the first incident, said Oakland Acting Police Chief Howard Jordan.

A "very extensive" manhunt took place, during which officers responding to an anonymous tip surrounded a nearby multi-unit apartment building on 74th Avenue about two hours later, Oakland police said....     Read the full story.

Mournful calm follows Oakland firestorm - Oakland, CA
...Mixon told his uncle he would have to call him back.

He never did.

What followed was an almost inexplicable chain of events that left Mixon and four Oakland police officers dead and sent this city into an all-too-familiar ritual of municipal grief and self-examination.

According to authorities and witnesses, Mixon opened fire as two motorcycle officers stood behind his car, apparently checking his papers. He had been released from prison in November and was wanted for an alleged parole violation.

Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, died despite a citizen's efforts to revive him.

Officer John Hege, 41, was taken to Highland Hospital, where he was declared brain-dead Sunday....     Read the full story.

Mark Dunakin - a cop committed to Oakland - Oakland, CA
Sgt. Mark Dunakin knew he was needed in Oakland and would never have chosen to be an officer anywhere else.

Dunakin, 40, lived in Tracy and was an Oakland cop for 18 years. The father of three was a graduate of Chabot College in Hayward. He was promoted to sergeant in 1999 and worked homicide cases in the criminal investigation division.

Dunakin was one of the lead investigators of the "Nut Cases" gang, whose members robbed dozens of people and killed five in a random, 10-week crime wave that terrorized the city in 2002 and 2003. Authorities said the young men killed and robbed simply for the thrill.

Dunakin later transferred to the traffic division and became a motorcycle officer, a coveted job in many police departments. He once told a Chronicle reporter that he relished working the streets on his Harley-Davidson....     Read the full story.

John Hege - always the first to respond - Oakland, CA
Officer John Hege always wanted to be a motorcycle cop, and in the last few months he got his wish.

Hege, 41, joined the Oakland Police Department 10 years ago after a stint as a reserve officer. He graduated from St. Mary's College in Moraga and had taught physical education and oversaw study hall at Tennyson High School in Hayward.

But police work was his true vocation, said his father, John S. Hege of Piedmont.

"I think he was drawn to it," the elder Hege said. "He wanted to be a policeman. And it was a good life's work for him. It fit his personality well. He enjoyed it, and he made a lot of good friends in the Police Department."

He lived with his dog on a small cul-de-sac in Concord. While off-duty, he was a high-school baseball umpire.

His neighbor Rosemary Kelso, 82, recalled Sunday that when Hege moved in about five years ago, he would ride his motorcycle to and from work.

The noise bothered her, so Kelso told her neighbors, "I don't like motorcycles. I'm going to call the police and tell them about this." They laughed and told her, "He is the police."...     Read the full story.
