Letter about motorcycles in parade ignored facts - Annandale, VA
Editorial
I would like to take a moment to set the record straight in reference to Jim Green's letter ["Crass commercialism and loud cycles marred parade," Dec. 9].
He took some exception to the police motorcycles in the Fredericksburg Christmas Parade. While his letter was, I'm sure, entertaining to some readers, it was somewhat lacking in accuracy.
The police motorcycle unit of which he wrote is a highly trained professional group that spends many hours perfecting their craft.
In the "cool-down" maneuver that's mentioned, the motorcycles never leave first gear. The mufflers are standard-issue mufflers one could buy from any Harley dealership.

Thousands Mourn Officer Slain on Domestic Dispute Call - Newington, CT
...And then, once the funeral procession for Police Officer Peter J. Lavery began on a bright, warm morning, the "thin blue line" became a long and wide human wave of hundreds of officers from across the region, from Poughkeepsie to Providence and beyond, slowly marching up Church Street to pay their respects to a 20-year veteran who died in the line of duty.
"The thin blue line took a hit today," the Newington police chief, Richard Mulhall, fighting back tears, told more than 5,000 people outside and inside the Church of the Holy Spirit five days after Officer Lavery was shot to death while responding to a domestic dispute.
Officer Lavery, 47, a motorcycle patrolman who served 17 years as a Newington officer and three before that in the town of Berlin, is believed to be the first police officer to die in the line of duty since this small town outside Hartford was incorporated in 1871. And for all the grief and ceremony that has accompanied his death, questions persist about why and how he was killed by a former Connecticut correction officer with a history of criminal behavior, including assault and illegal possession of weapons....

City pushing the limit on ticket quotas - Dallas, TX
Editorial
Just when I was getting to be a big fan of former Arlington Police Chief and Deputy City Manager David Kunkle -- now the Dallas police chief -- he came out recently endorsing a state law allowing ticket quotas.
As it is now, it's against the law to "evaluate, promote, compensate or discipline" a police officer based on how many tickets he or she does or does not write.
Maybe so, but try being a motorcycle officer sometime, and see what happens if not enough traffic citations flow through the system. The powers that be deny, deny and deny again that they encourage ticket-writing for economic purposes, but a lot of those who deny wouldn't want to answer while hooked up to a polygraph. They want that traffic citation dinero.
Boiled down, Kunkle's argument is that it's really difficult to evaluate the performance of a police officer whose principal duty is traffic enforcement if some kind of minimum standard isn't set....

Airport to add 6 Harleys: Extra motorcycles will patrol Metro due to their mobility and cost, officials say - Romulus, MI
Detroit Metro Airport is planning to double, to 12, the number of motorcycles it uses to patrol the parking lots and roads at the nation's 10th-busiest airport.
The airport hopes to have six more bikes on the road by May, airport spokesman Mike Conway said.
Of the 10 busiest airports in the United States, three others use motorcycle. Detroit Metro had tested and considered using Segways, two-wheeled scooters, Conway said, but airport managers decided against them, fearing there could be too much of a liability as they zipped around pedestrians.
Motorcycle cops are cheaper to put on the road than officers in patrol cars, and they can maneuver more easily in traffic, Conway said.
"They are more mobile than a police cruiser," Conway said. "If you have an emergency, you can go in the opposite direction, and you can go between cars in different instances."
The expense is minimal. The airport leases six Harley-Davidson Electra Glide police motorcycles for $100 a month each; the new bikes are being leased for the same price.
"It's much less than a car to operate, even with the gas," he said.
On Wednesday, Dearborn resident Al Scott said he could see how officers on motorcycles could help drivers.
"I've been here in the summer when the lines of cars were backed up ... a motorcycle cop could get through, I know a police car couldn't," Scott said.
Eighteen officers would be assigned to motorcycle patrols.
The airport is now tallying bids it received earlier this month for motorcycle helmets, leather jackets, steel-toed boots and other equipment needed to outfit the officers.
Conway said no additional personnel will be hired and that members of the existing force will be cross-trained so they can conduct patrols on motorcycles as well as in patrol cars. The motorcycles cannot be used three months of the year because of winter weather, he said....

Study: Napa doesn't need more cops, but firefighters are too slow - Napa, CA

State police motorcycle unit disbanded - Boston, MA
The state police motorcycle unit has been disbanded in a cost-cutting move that troopers say could compromise public safety, a published report said Monday.
The 40 troopers were reassigned to cruisers across the state as of Jan. 23, several of the troopers told The Boston Globe.
"It's just discouraging," said trooper Daniel Gale, a member of the unit for the past two years. "We were utilized so much and we were so active and now we're the first to be negatively impacted because of fiscal mismanagement."
Troopers said they fear public safety will be compromised by not having motorcycles help with crowd control - such as at Super Bowl celebrations - and to weave through traffic to get to car accidents....

Familiar police unit is curbed: Motorcyclists disband; budget is tightened - Boston, MA
The State Police motorcycle unit -- a familiar presence on state highways and at the scene of riots and rallies -- has been disbanded at least temporarily to save money, troopers in the unit said yesterday.
As of Jan. 23, the troopers were reassigned to cruisers across the state and many of their motorcycles are resting idly in their garages at home, troopers said. While troopers say they are committed to working in cruisers, they fear public safety will be compromised by not having motorcycles at the ready to escort VIPs, control crowds, and weave through traffic to the scene of a crime or an accident.
Trooper Daniel Gale, a two-year member of the motorcycle unit, has been reassigned to midnight shifts in a cruiser out of the Russell barracks; his Harley-Davidson Electra Glide, painted in French and electric blue, sits in his garage at home....
