...The radar units will travel in two 2006 Dodge Charger black and white police cruisers arriving sometime this spring, a purchase recently approved by the La Vista City Council and recommended by Lausten to gradually replace the current fleet of white and blue cars.

Shreveport motorcycle officer injured on I-49 - Shreveport, LA
Veteran Shreveport motorcycle officer Cpl. Tom Reich was severely injured today when he and his motorcycle were sideswiped by a hit-and-run driver on I-49.

Reich and his cycle skidded southbound on the expressway just north of the Bert Kouns Industrial Loop exit, Reich finally separating from the cycle in the wreck that occurred just after 11:30 a.m.

"He went tumbling and the motorcycle flipped a couple of times," said Sgt. Faye McGraw, a supervisor at the accident scene.

Reich's injuries include a broken right arm and a broken right leg, McGraw said. Reich was taken to Christus Schumpert St. Mary Place. Other injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, McGraw said.

Several witnesses offered varying descriptions of the car, from a dark green Intrepid to a dark-brownish mid-sized car to just a dark car, but McGraw said the vehicle should have recent damage on its passenger side.

"The car came up beside the motorcycle officer and brushed him," McGraw said. "Concerned citizens came to his (Reich's) rescue. That was really nice of them."...     Read the full story.

Motorcycle Officer In Good Condition After Being Hit By Car - Shreveport, LA
Shreveport Police call the wrecked police motorcycle on the side of I-49 one casualty of a hit and run with the wrong man.

"Motorcyle officers, just like any other officers are on the street a lot. And the chances of them being injured in a motorcycle is even greater then in a regular vehicle," said police spokeswoman Kacee Hargrave.

It was mid-morning on Saturday when an unknown driver hit Corporal Thomas Reich as he traveled south on I-49 near the Bert Kouns exit. Reich and his police motorcycle skidded off the roadway while the driver sped away.

Reich was taken to Christus Schumpert St. Mary Place where he's listed in good condition. He'll have surgery on Sunday for a broken shoulder.

Witness told police the car was a dark green sedan.

"The actual type of vehicle is unknown," Hargrave said. "However it would have sustained some type of frontal damage." Frontal damage that would make this car stand out from ordinary traffic.

"I'm astounded. I can't believe that somebody would do something like that," said Lee Doughty, who heard about the accident while he was pumping gas at a Bert Kouns gas station. "Those guys are out there putting their life on the line for you. They're cowards. They need to turn themselves in before it gets worse."...     Read the full story.

State motorcycle patrols to increase - Rockford, IL
Think Ponch and Jon from the hit television show “CHiPS” — only without the California sun, beautiful beaches or dark tans.

The state police plan to beef up motorcycle patrols on highways. Beginning as early as March, the agency intends to train 50 more troopers to work on motorcycles.

The plan is designed to help minimize the top five causes of fatal crashes, according to a purchasing document the state police published in late January. The so-called “Fatal Five” are speeding, drunken driving, failure to wear seat belts, tailgating and improper lane use.

In 2004, 1,355 people died in vehicle accidents on state highways, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. In 2003, the death toll was 1,454.

State police Lt. Mike VanVleet, who runs the state police’s 16th district in Pecatonica, said his district has one motorcycle and is unsure whether his district will add more.

He said the district uses the motorcycle for eight months of the year and the officer who is trained on the motorcycle is in a squad car when the bike is not in use.

“They are more maneuverable and quicker” than squad cars, VanVleet said. “We use them primarily for traffic patrol and special events.”...     Read the full story.

Harleys may be returned - Niles, MI
The Niles City Police Department's motorcycle program may be in jeopardy.

Since 2002, the department has leased two Harley-Davidson motorcycles from Motown Harley-Davidson in Taylor, near Detroit.

The Harley-Davidson Company initially developed a program where they lease brand-new motorcycles to police departments at a $1 per year rate.

“You can't pass up a deal like that,” said Chief of Police Richard Huff.

Not only are they invaluable in certain situations, but they are also a favorite among citizens. “They've been the best P.R. (public relations) tool we've ever had. Just with the feedback we get from the community,” Huff said.

From 2002 until 2004, that $1 per year rate was intact. Harley-Davidson ended up “flooding the market” with this deal, and several police departments across the country took advantage of it.

The agreement was that a department leased a motorcycle for a year, then the next year traded up and leased the newest models. As a result of its popularity, the supply and demand of the motorcycles drove the price of the traded-in models way down.

The program began to lose its luster and Harley-Davidson wasn't making nearly as much money on the used models as it originally had.

This caused the company to significantly increase the lease rate. In 2005, the rate had jumped from $1 a year to $1,200 a year per motorcycle. The Niles Police Department was able to come up with the extra $2,400 to lease the two motorcycles for that year. But as of the end of this month, the 2006 lease year, the price per motorcycle has again sharply increased, now to $2,250 per year. “This money just isn't available.” Huff said.

“One of the biggest assets is being able to access areas in the city that we can't with patrol cars,” Huff said.

Those areas include sidewalks, parks and easier access to car accidents on busy streets.

The motorcycles are only used when it's above 50 degrees. The motorcycles also get much better fuel efficiency than the patrol cars and they take advantage of that.

Due to the extensive training that is required in order to be able to drive the motorcycles, only two officers at the Niles City Police Department are authorized to drive them. Those officers are Lt. Scott Glick and Jim Kidwell....     Read the full story.

Officer's Wife Watches Motorcycle Chase From Hospital - Dalworthington, TX
The wife of an officer involved in the high-speed chase of a motorcyclist Thursday morning watched the incident unfold on a television in a neonatal intensive care unit where their triplets were receiving care.

HPD Solo Bike Officer Injured in Crash - Honolulu, HI
A Honolulu police officer was rushed to the hospital in serious condition after his motorcycle crashed on the Pali Highway. Traffic on the highway slowed to a crawl as police conducted their investigation.

The crash happened near Queen Emma Preschool at about 9:40am Friday morning. The good news is Solo Bike Officer Everett Higa, a seven-year H.P.D. veteran, has been upgraded to good condition.

A police motorcycle in the middle of the roadway. An officer down.

"Lacerations everywhere - face, arms and hand - and complained of abdominal pain," Sgt. James Causey, H.P.D. Solo Bike Detail, said.

Pieces of the bike littered the highway. Police say Officer Everett Higa may have been pursuing speeders on the Kailua-bound side of the Pali.

"This was not a designated, assigned area for enforcement today," Causey said. "But again, when violations occur, we take action. That's why we're investigating the witness statement of two speeding cars that were seen going by, just before the officer came by with blue lights and siren."

The apparent pursuit ended when the motorcycle slammed into a utility pole....     Read the full story.

Reward offered for info on police accident - Shreveport, LA
The local chapter of a fraternal motorcycle police group is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of the driver involved in a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a Shreveport officer.

Cpl. Tom Reich was hurt in the Feb. 4 wreck on I-49, which occurred when a dark green or brown vehicle, possibly a Malibu or an Intrepid, hit the right saddlebag of his motorcycle. The impact sent the cycle and Reich tumbling for well over 100 feet. The driver then sped away, police said.

Reich, on the force nearly 15 years, is out of the hospital and on the road to recovery, but it could be months before he returns to duty, police said. Force representatives were on hand today (Tuesday) at a ceremony at Festival Plaza where members of Chapter IV of the Blue Knights, a motorcycle club made up of current and retired police, presented the $500 to Crime Stoppers. This group also offers rewards leading to the arrest or conviction of people who commit major crimes, and this reward would be in addition to what Crime Stoppers would offer.

Shreveport city spokeswoman Liz Swaine, an assistant to Mayor Keith Hightower and an honorary member of the Blue Knights, said the chapter, which has just over two dozen members, doesn’t have a lot of money. But it reached into its coffers and members’ pockets to raise the reward, and she said members hope other area motorcycle clubs will chip in to help with rewards as well....     Read the full story.

Illinois police patrol attempts to add officers to motorcycle unit - Springfield, IL
Despite possible safety concerns, the Illinois State Police wants to expand its motorcycle patrol unit by up to 50 officers and two instructors sometime after March.

State Police spokesman Rick Hector said Illinois has a handful of motorcycle patrol units right now. The state police currently have 2,314 patrol cars.

"We really do not have an active motorcycle program at this time," Hector said. "It's basically used for the most part for parade-type situations, escorts of dignitaries possibly."

He added that motorcycles currently are not being used for enforcement activities.

State records outlining the expansion note that the agency is trying to increase the effectiveness and enforcement of the "Fatal Five" violations - speeding, drunken driving, seat belt violations, tailgating and improper lane use.

Hector said the details about the program will be released sometime in March. A price tag for the program was not available.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcycle patrol officers can target aggressive highway driving better than patrol cars because they can easily maneuver through traffic to make a stop.

But Ted Street, president of the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police, said safety concerns have typically outweighed that advantage in Illinois.

"It's just not something that seemingly is a tool that is used in Illinois that much," Street said. "With achieving high speeds people are not seeing and not hearing squad cars, much less motorcycles. The fuel efficiency, maneuverability takes a back seat to officer safety."...     Read the full story.

Police switch to BMW bikes - Montgomery, AL
The Montgomery Police Department is stepping up in class. At least it's motorcycle officers are.

The department has decided to gradually phase out its cheaper Harley-Davidson and Kawasaki motorcycles in favor of more-expensive German-made BMW bikes.

The Police Department bought five BMWs last year and plans to purchase 10 this year, said Maj. Bobby Briscoe, commander of the traffic division.

The department has decided to switch to BMWs because of safety and added features that come standard on the BMWs, said Briscoe.

On average, the BMW motorcycles cost about $18,000 each and come fully equipped with sirens and blue lights. The Kawasakis and Harley-Davidsons cost the department about $17,000, but don't come with lights or sirens. The BMWs also come standard with heated handles and adjustable seats.

"They last longer and we've determined they're safer," said Briscoe. "The maintenance is also cheaper and the parts are supposed to last longer."...     Read the full story.

BR shooting still unexplained - Baton Rouge, LA
Sharalean Temple heard the gunshots that killed her son Friday afternoon through an open line to her son’s cell phone.

Along with shouted words, she heard about three gunshots, Temple said Saturday inside her home surrounded by family members.

“I could tell something was wrong when he called,” Temple, 51, said. “We didn’t talk, but I heard raised voices on the line, then a few minutes later I heard some shots. That was his last phone call.”

Her son, George Temple II, 24, was shot and killed in a parking lot about 2:15 p.m. after a scuffle with a motorcycle officer escorting a funeral down Greenwell Springs Road, authorities reported Friday.

The officer, who apparently wanted to cite Temple for a traffic violation, pulled Temple’s car over in the parking lot of Auto Zone on the corner of Greenwell Springs and Joor Road, authorities said.

Only female cop on motorcycle retiring after 25 years of service - Jersey City, NJ
The first woman motorcycle cop in the history of Jersey City - if not the state - is retiring after 25 years of protecting residents and paving the way for the women who would follow in her tire tracks.

"I enjoyed it very much - the freedom of it, being out in the air and the wind, a little closer to the people," said Police Officer Mary Scheider, who will have a retirement party tonight and officially hang up her helmet on Wednesday.

Scheider, the first and still the only woman to serve on the Jersey City Motorcycle Squad, has won numerous departmental citations.

In 1987, she was a six-year veteran - and one of just a handful of women on the force - when she was asked to give the motorcycle squad a try.

"I enjoy the job," Scheider said. "I enjoy interacting with people and I enjoy writing summonses for the people who put others in danger, who think they are the only person on the road. I never really thought of myself as a groundbreaker."

She said there were some who gave her a hard time when she first became a police officer, and it didn't get easier when she became a motorcycle cop. She said there still are some in the department who don't think it's a job for a woman....     Read the full story.
