2006 Motorcops.com Calendar Again to Benefit Families of Fallen Officers - Dallas, TX
The 2006 Motorcops.com Calendar is now shipping. The 12-month Calendar features over 100 photographs of police motorcycle units from across the United States. The large format wall calendar, measuring 11x14 has plenty of room to keep track of your important 2006 dates. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Calendar will be donated to Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS).
“It was great to start shipping the 2006 Edition,” said Mark Kopang owner of Motorcops.com that publishes the police motorcycle calendar. “Working on the Calendar as a part-time endeavor to my web development job has been tough. All the hard work over the past year is worth it when I hear the positive feedback about the Calendar and knowing I am helping the families of fallen officers.”
“It was a tough decision who to include in the Calendar this year as nearly 60 units wanted to participate. I ended up doing sixteen photo shoots and then selected twelve that provided a variety of motorcycle equipment, uniform styles and locations,” said Kopang.
The police motorcycle units featured in the 2006 Motorcops.com Calendar are: Metropolitan Police Department, Washington, DC, Beverly Hills Police Department, California, Lakeland Police Department, Florida, Oklahoma City Police Department, Oklahoma, College State Police Department, Texas, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Washington, Philadelphia Highway Patrol, Pennsylvania, Milwaukee Police Department, Wisconsin, Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police, Texas, Cleveland Police Department, Ohio, Weymouth Police Department, Massachusetts and Albuquerque Police Department, New Mexico....

When officers die, club helps their survivors - Murfreesboro, TN
When Murfreesboro Officer Kay Rogers died in the line of duty Nov. 9, her family didn't have to worry about immediate costs and funeral expenses.
That's because the One Hundred Club of Rutherford County gave $1,000 to her brother, Rickey Holt, for the family's needs preparing for the funeral and $6,500 for paying part of her funeral expenses in her hometown of Jackson, said club President Evan Cope.
Rogers, 43, of Murfreesboro died from injuries suffered when a driver made a U-turn in front of her causing the officer's motorcycle to crash into the car Nov. 8 on Middle Tennessee Boulevard in front of Bellwood School. She was the department's first and only woman motorcycle officer....

Dummy used to slow Scottsdale speeders - Scottsdale, AZ
...Although Montgomery has made no progress in getting the Pima speed limit reduced, he said the dummy effectively slows traffic on the main roadway. But he wishes it could do more.
"When I first witnessed the mannequin, one thing came to mind: Can the mannequin give out tickets?" he asked. "It’s a comical question, but underlines the limitation of a mannequin . . . it can remind people to drive slowly, but it can’t enforce the law."
Duggan said the dummy patrol is just one of several tools the department uses to deter speeders and remind motorists to drive safely.
The others include patrol officers, motorcycle officers, signs and photo-enforcement vans....

Driver cleared in fatal crash with motorcycle deputy - Rancho Cucamonga, CA
A driver involved in the crash that killed San Bernardino County sheriff's Deputy Daniel Lobo won't face criminal charges after prosecutors deemed it an accident.
Luis Duay Del Rosario, 59, of Temecula, who was heading home from his job at Tamco when he pulled in front of deputies, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs and was not driving recklessly, a prosecutor said Thursday.
"It's very hard to tell, when you have multiple sirens, which direction the noise is coming from, and so it was a pretty confusing situation," said San Bernardino County Chief Deputy District Attorney Richard Maxwell.
Maxwell received a report on the Oct. 11 crash from the Sheriff's Department about a week ago and the case was rejected Wednesday. It included a synopsis of the crash, interviews, measurements and other information on the incident, Maxwell said.
Sheriff's investigators made no recommendations of criminal charges, Maxwell said.
Lobo, 35, died at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, less than an hour after he struck Rosario's Toyota Camry on Arrow Highway west of Etiwanda Avenue. He and two other deputies were heading to another car crash at the time.
He was the second motorcycle officer from the Rancho Cucamonga station to die in the line of duty in a little more than a year. sheriff's motorcycle Deputy Ron Ives died in September 2004 in a traffic accident....

Two Baton Rouge police officers involved in accident - Baton Rouge, LA
Two Baton Rouge police officers are recovering after their motorcycles collided while they were escorting a funeral procession Thursday. The accident occurred in the 1500 block of Florida St. shortly before noon.
Investigators said Cpl. Quintin Merritt turned his motorcycle around to join the procession, mistakenly believing he was assigned as an escort. Merritt then collided with motorcycle escort Cpl. Jeffrey Webb and both were rushed to the hospital, though they had no apparent serious injuries.
Chief Jeff LeDuff said a motorcycle officer's job is considered one of the most dangerous in the department.
"It's one thing to get out and joyride on a Sunday afternoon," LeDuff said, "but these guys work off a motorcycle. It's a totally different task. They are looking for violators. They are running escorts. They are arriving at scenes, so they are constantly having to scan and not miss anything. Unfortunately, today odds caught up with us and we missed something."...

S.D. cops see traffic ticketing drop 40% - San Diego, CA
...The 47 motorcycle officers, who are the main ticket-writers in the department, have been assigned more nontraffic enforcement duties at special events and on other details. They are called out more to answer 911 calls and to help at violent crime scenes.
And this year, the department made a switch from Kawasaki, which no longer makes police motorcycles, to BMW models. The change has become time-consuming because officers have required more training than anticipated to learn to handle the larger and more powerful BMWs.
The department also has stopped paying overtime for officers to attend mandatory court appearances when a driver contests a ticket. In the past, officers were paid overtime to go to court on their regular days off.
Officers now attend court on work days, which also removes them from the "enforcement mode."...

Scottsdale police escort bowl teams around town - Scottsdale, AZ
Snarled traffic and gawking passers-by are as much a part of the annual Fiesta Bowl tradition as the game itself.
Police motorcades have also become part of Bowl Week in recent years, as visiting teams have made their headquarters at northeast Valley resorts.
Scottsdale is currently paying for eight to 12 police officers to form "moving roadblocks" for Ohio State and Notre Dame as players are shuttled between hotels, practices and other functions before Monday's Fiesta Bowl.
Scottsdale Police Chief Alan Rodbell said the motorcades have become an annual tradition.
The focus is to cut down on traffic congestion and to prevent the football teams from inconveniencing Scottsdale commuters, he said.
The teams' charter buses are guided around by several motorcycle officers who block streets and direct cars as needed to keep the athletes on schedule.
"We just try to get them off the roads in time, and in one piece," Rodbell said.
The police motorcades are funded by Scottsdale, not by the universities.
Motorcycle officers and other traffic patrolmen are assigned to the Fiesta Bowl escorts....

It was Aug. 28 when the life of Officer Barnes “changed forever,” he said in a letter to the Culpeper community published today on page A5. While directing funeral traffic for a young girl who died the week before in a school bus accident, Barnes too was the victim of being hit by a vehicle.
Airlifted from the scene of the collision on Sperryville Pike to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, his condition was touch and go for several days.
