Southlake DPS officers sued - Southlake, TX
...The lawsuit identifies defendants as Robert Welch, Alton Wells and Mike Berryhill. A fourth officer is identified as John Doe. Welch is no longer with the department, but the other officers remain on the force.

The lawsuit contends that Sauls, then a Coppell resident, was driving through Southlake when he nearly collided with a motorcycle officer, Welch. Welch pulled him over minutes later, followed by additional officers.

The lawsuit states that the officers created a story that Sauls had threatened to shoot Welch with a gun, the lawsuit states. No weapon was in the vehicle, according to the lawsuit....     Read the full story.

Hundreds of officers turn out to honor Sollman - Plainfield Township, NJ
Tom Fitzpatrick, a 10-year veteran of the Upper Darby highway patrol, climbed aboard his police motorcycle Thursday morning and braced himself against the cold for an 80-mile ride from Delaware County.

Angleton police add motorcycle patrolman - Angleton, TX
Jeffrey Dodson is making history on two wheels, doing something he first learned in Italy.

Dodson, an Angleton Police Department patrolman, will become the first officer to cruise through Angleton streets on a motorcycle instead of a patrol car. Starting Monday, he’ll hit the city’s streets enforcing traffic laws on two wheels instead of four.

“I’ve always liked motorcycles,” said Dodson, who joined the department 14 months ago. “I was raised on motorcycles. I first learned to ride when we lived in Italy. My dad was in the military."...     Read the full story.

Motorcycle Officer Hit, Injured - Omaha, NE
An Omaha police officer was injured at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday as he drove his motorcycle near 58th and Blondo streets.

The officer was riding with his lights and sirens when he collided with a Ford Escort at the intersection. He was taken in serious condition to Creighton University Medical Center.

The Omaha Police Deparment said his injuries are not considered life-threatening. An investigation into the collision is under way. ...     Read the full story.

Injured Officer Identified - Omaha, NE
The Omaha police officer injured when he collided with a car while riding his motorcycle Thursday evening has been identified as Officer Patrick Telley Jr.

Police said the Harley Davidson motorcycle Telley was riding was headed east on Blondo Street with emergency lights and sirens in use. As Telley passed a slow-moving vehicle near 58th Street, a Ford Escort turned into his path....     Read the full story.

Police rev up hog rodeo: BSO deputy, team win as 32 agencies vie at annual charity event - Sunrise, FL
As dozens of police motorcycles roared around her, Officer Kari Howard sat confidently on her cycle with riding gloves wrapping her hands and iPod tunes jamming in her ears.

The six-year veteran of the Kissimmee Police Department was gearing up to take her second run around an obstacle course Saturday outside the Office Depot Center in Sunrise.

The 16th annual Southeast Police Motorcycle Rodeo drew hundreds of police riders and their families from around Florida, and as far away as Maryland and New Jersey.

Howard, 31, said she wasn't intimidated by the competition Saturday, despite the fact it was her first motorcycle rodeo and that she was one of only a few female participants.

''It's just like anything else,'' Howard said. ``If you can ride well, then it makes no difference.''

The motorcyclists, riding their departments' police bikes and dressed in full uniform, weaved through orange cones on the ground, earning points for accuracy and time....     Read the full story.

Man arrested for looting cop's helmet during 2003 wildfires - San Diego, CA
A 23-year-old man is in custody today for allegedly stealing a San Diego police officer's motorcycle helmet during the October 2003 wildfires, authorities said.

Jack Robert Minitch was arrested on suspicion of looting during a state of emergency, grand theft and possession of stolen property, California Highway Patrol Captain Lisa Wrobel said. ...     Read the full story.

Police cycle trial stalled - Monongahela, PA
A trial run for a police motorcycle ended abruptly Wednesday because it didn't travel through the proper channels.

Mayor Ken Coles and police Chief Dennis Mendicino apparently accepted a free, no-obligation offer from Cerini Harley-Davidson-Buell, of Rostraver Township, to test a 2004 Harley-Davidson police package for two months. The goal was to explore possible gasoline cost savings. Police had been using the motorcycle for two weeks.

Cop OK after fall - Rockland, MA
A police officer was thrown from his motorcycle when he ran into a low-hanging wire near Plain and West Water streets Saturday morning.

Officer Gregory Pigeon, 43, was riding south on Plain Street at 11:06 a.m. when the patrol Harley-Davidson became tangled in a cable television line according to police. A subcontractor with Adelphia Cable was working on the line at the time.

Pigeon was thrown off the bike and suffered a few bumps and bruises but was not seriously injured, police said. He was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth where he was treated in the emergency room and released....     Read the full story.

City reviews purchase of police BMW motorcycles - San Diego, CA
The San Diego City Council will consider today whether to award a contract to purchase BMW motorcycles to replace the San Diego Police Department's fleet.

If approved, the department will initially buy 55 motorcycles at a cost of about $1.1 million – funded by an unlicensed-driver vehicle impound fee. Each BMW motorcycle costs $19,531.

The average life of a police motorcycle is six years or 60,000 miles, according to a city manager's report. The department's fleet of 72 Kawasaki motorcycles now averages 56,346 miles, with 38 motorcycles topping 60,000 miles.

Police motorcycles from Germany's BMW were selected over models by Honda, a Japanese company, and Harley Davidson, a U.S. company, according to the report. Kawasaki, another Japanese company, is eliminating its production of police motorcycles....     Read the full story.

A Department of Public Safety motorcycle officer has been injured in a traffic accident on the Loop 1-0-1 in Scottsdale.

Officer airlifted after collision - Rio Rancho, NM
A motorcycle officer was rushed to the hospital after he collided with a police car in Rio Rancho on Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened in front of Rio Rancho High School, just as classes were letting out for the day.

Both officers were trying to direct traffic for the students on Loma Colorado Street when the accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m.

Officer Shelby Smith was riding the motorcycle when it collided with the back of a police car driven by Officer Tim Roby. Smith had to be flown via Lifeguard to University Hospital for multiple fractures in both arms....     Read the full story.

A teen-ager was arrested and at least two people were injured during yesterday's Martin Luther King Jr. community parade in Jersey City.

Parade organizers said they didn't see any problems at the parade, but police said they arrested a 16-year-old boy who was waving a knife, and a motorcycle cop was injured after crashing his bike....     Read the full story.

Eureka motorcycle officer takes on the competition - Eureka, CA
Although he didn't place as high as he did last year, Eureka Police Officer Wayne Cox still believes he benefited at the ninth annual Southwest Police Motorcycle Training and Competition in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Statistically, riding a motorcycle is one of the most dangerous assignments in law enforcement, Cox said.

"These competitions allow motor officers to showcase their skills, hone their accident avoidance techniques and practice in a safe, but competitive environment," he said....     Read the full story.

HPD short on number of women in its ranks - Houston, TX
...Beth Kreuzer, who was the police department's first female motorcycle officer, contends she was forced off the unit for cooperating with an internal investigation that resulted from a male officer's complaint against their supervisor. Jurors began deliberating Tuesday and will continue today.

In 10 days of testimony, a number of witnesses have depicted a working environment in which female officers who try to fill certain roles are met with hostility.

Kreuzer, who spent 10 years as a homicide detective, said male officers in the motorcycle unit didn't speak with her for two years after her move there in 1998....     Read the full story.

Blue Knights to host charity cruise in - St. Robert, MO

Fired officer loses round to get job back - Chandler, AZ
A Chandler police officer fired in the 2002 shooting of an Ahwatukee Foothills mother doesn't deserve to get his job back, the city's Merit Board decided Wednesday in a 5-0 vote.
