ARLINGTON COUNTRY POLICE DEPARTMENT MOTORCYCLE UNIT.
By Lieutenant Robert (Bob) Medairos

Arlington County is an urban county of about 26 square miles located directly across the Potomac River from Washington DC. No incorporated towns or cities lie within Arlington’s boundaries. Originally part of the area surveyed for the nation’s capital, the portion on the west bank of the Potomac River was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia by the U.S. Congress in 1846. This area was known as Alexandria City and Alexandria County until 1920 when the county portion was renamed Arlington County.

Arlington had an estimated population of 204,800 on July 1, 2007, reflecting an 8% increase since 2000. It is among the most densely populated jurisdictions in the country with a population density of about 7,938 persons per square mile. Arlington County is best known to visitors as the home of the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery.

Arlington County Police Department
Special Operations Section, Motor Unit

The Arlington County Police Department Special Operations Section, Motor Unit is committed to maintaining the safe, efficient flow of traffic in the County. The unit accomplishes this through education and enforcement. Currently, 12 officers and five supervisors respond to various community, traffic related needs with the use of motorcycles, marked and unmarked police cruisers, and a speed monitoring trailer. Officers employ radar and laser technology to address neighborhood speeding complaints. The officers of the unit are routinely outstanding performers in regional safety campaigns such as Smooth Operator, which addresses the dangers of aggressive driving. In addition to the enforcement of state and local laws, officers of the unit give traffic safety classes at the Citizens Police Academy, The Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court safe driving class for teens and at various community meetings.

In addition, the Motor Unit coordinates motor carrier inspections. Officers conduct various safety inspections on large commercial vehicles and often put unsafe vehicles out of service until repairs can be made. The unit also supplements the patrol officers by providing traffic control and scene security on major accidents, fires and/or events such as September 11, 2001.

The Motor Unit conducts high security motorcades for The President and other high profile dignitaries. These assignments require advanced training and detailed planning with multiple jurisdictions including the United States Secret Service and The State Department.

On September 11, 2001, the Arlington County Police Department’s Motor Unit played a vital role in the evacuation and security of the Pentagon after terrorist hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 and crashed it into the Pentagon. Motor Units took command of the outer perimeter of the Pentagon by closing down all entry points and assisted with the evacuation of several thousand military and civilian personnel to safely.
