CHARLESTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE MORCYCLE UNIT.
By Master Deputy Rob Grimsley

|
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office have had police motorcycles on and off since the 1920's. In 1998, the Sheriff's Office started the motor squad back up after a 4 to 5 year stint without them. In 1998, the Sheriff's Office ordered 4 Harley-Davidson Road Kings. To date, we have 7 Road Kings in service.
We train 8 hours once a month and our riders re-certify yearly. Our training consists of cone courses, off road riding, braking, high speed curve negotiation on a speed way, and officer survival shooting from a motorcycle. We also compete in police motorcycle rodeos. Charleston County Sheriff's Office conducts two police motorcycle schools each year. The schools last for two weeks and are for basic, as well as advanced riders. These schools are open to any certified police officer who would like to attend free of charge.
The primary duties of the motor squad is traffic enforcement. We also work traffic collision, and do hundreds of hours of special assignments which include (parades, runs, protest/demonstrations, VIP escorts and other escorts). Our Deputies ride year round with pride and prestige.
Deputies who want to become a member of the motor squad must go through an oral interview and a riding test to determine what type of skills they have. The deputies that are selected, then go through the two week Basic/Advanced motor school. Candidates must pass the first week in order to proceed into the second weekwhich gets much harder.
There is an extreme amount of pride in the motor squad and our riders work very hard to maintain the Honesty and Integrity that it takes to be a part of the greatest group in law enforcement"Motor Man."
If you would like to contribute information on your squad, please
